FL Senator Mel Martinez pulls a Palin (the anti-Quit)

Mel Martinez, a Republican Senator from Florida, announced today that he would step down from his post to spend more time with his family in his state. It was widely known that he would not seek re-election, but that he is resigning his post a year before his term ends comes as a surprise to many.

What does it all mean? It means Florida Gov. Crist, on the last leg of his own term, will have to pick a replacement. It may be difficult decision for him since he’s currently in a primary for the Senate seat himself (against FL House speaker Marc Rubio).  Crist is going to have to pick someone who will not run for re-election themselves, or that he could easily beat. Oh yeah, and the Democratic candidate is U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek of Miami.
